Deja-vu

The feeling of déjà vu is defined by the impression of reliving the same experience without it being identical either. For this series of photos I tried to recreate this feeling. Through this series, the photos use the codes of historical painting (especially in the gestures of the models) and are updated in a contemporary context. The paintings I have selected are paintings that embody without subtlety the attributes and expectations associated to gender. By seeking to reapply them in a contemporary context, I wondered on how to represent these clichés about masculinity and femininity. I therfore decided to  work with queer models who on a daily basis challenge the stereotypical attributes of masculine and feminine.

To present this series, I created an installation that mixed photography with video. The spectator follows a path, like when visiting a museum, and gradually discovers the photos projected on a mesh fabric. Each photo had its own projection surface. The video alternately presents the painting that inspired the photo and then the photo itself. In addition, in the loop of the video, the pronouns of the painting model and the photo model are also presented.
